Le Castellet
There are estates you visit for the wine. And there are estates you visit because they changed the course of a region’s history. Domaine Tempier is the second kind. Nestled in the terraced hillsides below Le Castellet, this family-run domaine is the reason Bandol exists as a serious appellation — and the reason Mourvèdre, the noble but temperamental grape that defines it, didn’t disappear altogether.
Since the 1940s, when Lucien Peyraud began the painstaking revival of traditional Bandol winemaking, Tempier has been the reference — the estate against which all others in the appellation are measured. The wines are deep, structured, age-worthy, and unmistakably of this place: sun-baked garrigue, warm stone, and the distant salt of the Mediterranean.
The Mourvèdre Cathedral
Mourvèdre is not an easy grape. It demands heat, shelter, and time — and in return, it gives wines of extraordinary depth and complexity. At Tempier, the terraced vineyards face the sea, catching the maritime breeze that tempers the Provençal sun and allows the grapes to ripen slowly and completely.
The reds are the stars: dark, aromatic, layered with notes of black fruit, leather, herbs, and the earthy warmth of the garrigue. They reward patience — a good Tempier will age for decades — but even young, they have a presence that fills the glass and the room.
The rosé, often overlooked, is equally serious: structured, dry, and far removed from the pale sippers that dominate the Provence market. This is rosé for the table, not the pool.
The Visit
Tastings are refreshingly straightforward: Monday to Friday, 9am–1pm and 2–6pm, no appointment needed. The cellar is modest, the welcome is warm, and the conversation is about wine, not marketing. Come with questions — the team knows the history, the terroir, and the vintages intimately.
Afterward, walk up to Le Castellet for lunch in the medieval village, or continue to La Cadière-d’Azur for a second tasting and a panoramic view over the vineyards you’ve just tasted.
