Door-to-door tips for first-timers
The Toulon coast is easier to reach than its quiet feel suggests — it just isn't the obvious airport everyone defaults to. A little planning gets you here faster, and with less of the Riviera traffic.
By air
The closest airport is Toulon-Hyères (TLN), barely half an hour from the villa, with seasonal routes from Paris, the UK and a handful of European cities — worth checking first, as a short transfer makes a real difference at the end of a travel day. For more choice, Marseille-Provence (MRS) is about an hour away by road and well connected across Europe, and Nice (NCE), around an hour and a half east, has the widest international network of all. From the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands you'll usually find the easiest connections into Marseille or Nice; from Paris, Toulon-Hyères is the quick hop.
By train
If you'd rather not fly, the TGV runs direct from Paris to Toulon in well under four hours, and Toulon's station sits right in the centre. It's a civilised way to arrive from northern France — or onward from Paris if you've crossed by Eurostar.
Getting around once you're here
This stretch of coast rewards a car. Public transport reaches the town and the nearest beaches, but the hidden coves, the hilltop villages and the wine estates are spread out, and the freedom to chase a quiet beach in the morning and a village square at dusk is half the holiday. Book ahead in summer; pick up at the airport or station.
Mauricette's Tip
Don't rule out Toulon-Hyères just because the fares look higher — by the time you've added an hour of motorway from Marseille or Nice, plus the car, the small airport half an hour away often wins on both time and temper. Whatever you book, aim to arrive in daylight: the first sight of the bay from the hills is one you won't want to miss in the dark.
