Pair a cellar with a hilltop lunch
Most people arrive in Provence thinking of rosé and leave converted to Bandol. This small appellation in the hills behind Toulon makes some of the most serious wine in the South of France — deep, structured reds built on Mourvèdre that age for decades — alongside the pale, mineral rosés the region is famous for. And nearly all of it is within half an hour of the villa.
A relaxed afternoon among the vines is one of the great pleasures of a stay here.
Bandol: the reds worth the detour
If you taste one thing, make it Bandol. The benchmark is Domaine Tempier, the estate that put the appellation on the world map — but the whole hillside around Le Castellet and La Cadière-d'Azur is dotted with cellars worth a stop.
Rosé and the coastal estates
Closer to the sea, the estates lean towards the elegant rosés that define a Provence summer. From the seaside vineyards near Bormes and La Londe to the cellars just outside Toulon, there's a glass for every table — our full guide to wine tasting around Toulon maps the estates and routes in detail.
How to taste like a local
Call ahead. The best estates welcome visitors, but tastings are often by appointment, especially outside July and August. Go mid-morning or late afternoon, never at lunch (everything closes), and build the visit around a meal in a nearby village — a cellar followed by a long lunch under the plane trees is the day at its best.
Mauricette's Tip
Buy a case at the cellar door, not a single bottle. Bandol reds reward a few years of patience, and the prices at the estate make a mockery of what you'll pay at home — you'll wish you'd brought a bigger car. Ask the vigneron which vintage to drink now and which to lay down; they love the question, and you'll learn more in five minutes than from any label.
Base yourself among the vines
