Hiking
At 1,097 metres, Bargème is the highest village in the Var — and it feels like it. The air is thinner, the light is clearer, and the silence has a quality you won't find anywhere on the coast. This tiny medieval hamlet clings to a rocky outcrop in the pre-Alps, crowned by the ruins of a feudal castle and surrounded by nothing but sky, forest, and the distant hum of wind through the pines.
Bargème is not on the way to anywhere. You come here on purpose, and the journey — winding mountain roads through increasingly wild landscape — is part of the experience. When you arrive, the reward is a village that feels like it hasn't changed in centuries, and doesn't intend to.
A Castle in the Clouds
The ruins of the Pontevès castle dominate the village — a 13th-century fortress whose crumbling towers and walls frame views across the Var's mountainous interior. From up here, the world drops away: ridgelines, valleys, and forests stretching to every horizon.
Below the castle, the village itself is barely more than a handful of stone houses, a church, and a couple of narrow lanes. That's the point. Bargème's power lies in what it doesn't have: no traffic, no noise, no rush.
Honey, Cheese & Mountain Air
The surrounding countryside produces excellent goat cheese and mountain honey — both available at the small artisan market that appears in summer. A handful of local restaurants serve hearty mountain cooking: soups, grillades, and dishes seasoned with wild herbs from the hillsides.
The walking trails around Bargème are spectacular: ridge walks with 360-degree views, forest paths scented with thyme and rosemary, and the kind of solitude that feels increasingly rare.
