Some villages look beautiful. Cotignac feels beautiful — in the way that only a place shaped by centuries of slow living can. Tucked into the green heart of the Var, it sits beneath a towering tufa cliff riddled with ancient cave dwellings, its streets cooled by fountains and shaded by vast plane trees that have witnessed more apéros than anyone could count.

The village unfolds at its own pace: cobbled lanes lead to shady squares where locals linger over espressos, artisan boutiques display Provençal ceramics and linens, and the air carries the scent of olive oil and fresh bread from the bakery on the corner.

A Village Written in Stone

Cotignac's most striking feature is its cliff face — a wall of honeycombed tufa rock looming above the rooftops, pockmarked with troglodyte dwellings that date back to the 16th century. You can climb up for a closer look and imagine the lives lived in these rock-hewn rooms, with their improbable views over the village below.

At ground level, the old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and stone staircases that reward aimless wandering. The Cours Gambetta — the main avenue — is lined with cafés under plane trees where time moves at a distinctly Provençal tempo.

Markets, Wine & Long Lunches

Cotignac's Tuesday market fills the main square with colour: olives, goat cheese, lavender honey, local wines, and seasonal produce piled high on trestle tables. It's the kind of market where the vendor talks you through every variety before letting you taste.

The surrounding countryside produces excellent olive oil and rosé — several domaines welcome visitors for tastings. And the village restaurants serve the kind of honest Provençal cooking that makes you wonder why you'd ever eat anywhere else: daube, tapenade, ratatouille, and tarte tropezienne for the road.

Practical Information

Getting there: Cotignac is about 1h15 north of Toulon via the A57 and D560. Free parking at the edge of the village.

Best time to visit: Tuesday morning for the market. Spring and early autumn for fewer crowds and perfect walking weather.

Don't miss: The troglodyte cliff, the Cours Gambetta for a café au lait, and a tasting at a local domaine.

Mauricette's Tip

Cotignac is a village that rewards slowness. Arrive without a plan, let the streets lead you, and settle into a café chair with a glass of local rosé. The cliff will still be there when you look up.
