Town Access
Some beaches seduce with sand. Bestouan seduces with drama. Tucked just west of Cassis's postcard port, this pebble cove sits at the foot of Cap Canaille — Europe's tallest sea cliffs — and the effect is immediate: clear water, white stones underfoot, and a wall of ochre rock rising vertically behind you like a natural amphitheatre.
It's not the wildest beach on the coast, nor the most remote. But that's exactly the point. Bestouan is civilised swimming at its finest — five minutes from an espresso, a market, and a harbour full of colourful pointus.
Where the Cliffs Meet the Sea
The water at Bestouan is startlingly clear — a function of the pebble bed and the sheltered cove. On still mornings, you can see straight to the bottom, fish circling lazily between the stones. Snorkellers will find enough to keep them occupied along the rocky edges, where sea urchins and small wrasse hide in the crevices.
Above it all, Cap Canaille looms. At 394 metres, it's the highest maritime cliff in France — a fact that hits differently when you're floating at its base, looking up through salt-stung eyes.
An Easy Kind of Elegance
Bestouan draws a mix: couples with books and straw hats, families with snorkel masks, solo swimmers doing brisk laps before lunch. A handful of beach cafés line the back of the cove — nothing flashy, just cold rosé, simple salads, and deckchairs angled toward the view.
The walk from Cassis port takes barely five minutes along the seafront promenade, which means you can combine a morning swim with a market browse and a harbour-side lunch without ever needing a car.

Mauricette's Tip
Wear water shoes — the pebbles are beautiful but unforgiving underfoot. Arrive early, claim your spot, and let the view do the rest. Bestouan rewards those who settle in rather than rush through.
