Not every village has a waterfall. Sillans-la-Cascade has a 42-metre one — and it's hiding at the end of a forest path that feels like a shortcut into another world. The village itself is a quiet Provençal charmer: stone houses, shady squares, and the kind of unhurried rhythm that makes you forget you ever had a schedule.

But it's the cascade that draws people here. A short walk through holm oaks and Mediterranean pines leads to a natural amphitheatre where water plunges into a turquoise pool surrounded by mossy rock and dappled light. It's dramatic, serene, and entirely unexpected.

The Walk to the Falls

The trail starts at the edge of the village and follows a well-marked path through the forest — about 800 metres, flat and easy, suitable for families. The sound of water builds as you approach, and then the trees open to reveal the cascade in full flow, framed by limestone cliffs and hanging greenery.

Swimming at the base of the waterfall is currently restricted for conservation reasons, but the view alone is worth the walk. Bring a picnic and find a spot among the rocks — this is one of the Var's most photogenic lunch settings.

A Village Worth Lingering In

Back in the village, Sillans rewards a slow wander. The old centre is built around a château (private, but visible from the square), medieval ramparts, and stone lanes that lead to quiet terraces and a handful of honest Provençal restaurants. The weekly market brings local honey, truffles, and seasonal produce.
