There's a version of Provence that has nothing to do with the coast: no sand, no rosé terraces, no sunscreen. Just forest, silence, and the smell of pine and warm earth underfoot. That's the Massif des Maures, the wild range of cork-oak and chestnut hills that rises behind the coast, with trailheads barely fifteen minutes from the villa.

What to do

Pick a trail to match your legs, from gentle family loops to ridge walks with sea views, and aim for the Chartreuse de la Verne, the remote monastery hidden deep in the hills. Autumn brings the chestnut harvest; spring brings the wildflowers.

Practical information

  • Getting there: about 15 minutes from the villa to the nearest trailheads; the chestnut village of Collobrières is about 35 minutes.

  • Best seasons: autumn for colours and chestnuts, spring for wildflowers and mild temperatures, winter for crisp, quiet trails. Summer is often too hot, and access may be restricted for fire risk.

  • Fire risk: in summer, check massif access before setting out, as trails can close at short notice.

Mauricette's Tip

Combine a morning walk with a coastal afternoon: the Maures drop down toward Le Lavandou and Bormes-les-Mimosas, so you can swap forest for beach in half an hour.
