Le Lavandou wears its fishing heritage like a comfortable shirt — casually, proudly, and with zero pretension. This lively coastal village stretches along the Var shoreline, its colourful facades reflecting in the harbour where fishing boats still unload the morning catch alongside leisure yachts and dive boats.

With twelve beaches along its coastline — from wide sandy stretches to intimate coves — Le Lavandou offers a different swim for every mood. But the village itself is the draw: a seafront promenade made for evening strolls, restaurants that take fish seriously, and a community that still runs on the rhythms of the sea.

Port, Promenade & Provençal Colour

The harbour is the heart of Le Lavandou. Fishing boats painted in Mediterranean blues and reds bob alongside the quay, where cafés and restaurants set out their terraces and the evening passeggiata begins. The old fishermen's quarter — a tangle of narrow streets behind the port — retains its authentic character: low houses, potted plants, and the occasional cat surveying its domain from a windowsill.

The seafront promenade connects the port to the eastern beaches, passing palm trees, public art, and a succession of view points where the Îles d'Or shimmer on the horizon.

Seafood, Markets & Sea Breezes

Le Lavandou's restaurants are some of the best on this stretch of coast for seafood: bouillabaisse, grilled daurade, sea urchins in season, and plateaux de fruits de mer that arrive looking like still lifes. The Thursday market fills the town centre with Provençal colour: olives, spices, fabrics, and flowers alongside the inevitable rosé.

Water sports are part of the culture: diving, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat trips to the Îles d'Or (Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Le Levant) depart from the port daily in season.

Practical Information

Getting there: About 45 minutes from Toulon via the D559 coastal road or the A57. Paid parking in the centre and along the seafront.

Best time to visit: Thursday for the market. Summer for beach life and boat trips. Shoulder season for a quieter, more local feel.

Don't miss: The harbour at sunset, a seafood lunch on the port, and a swim at Saint-Clair or Cavalière.

Mauricette's Tip

Le Lavandou is at its best in the golden hour before sunset. Find a table on the port terrace, order a glass of local rosé, and watch the fishing boats come in. That's the Var coast, distilled.

Twelve beaches, one harbour, and an unforgettable sunset — all within reach from Villa Mauricette.
